During my career I have seen exciting progress in the massage therapy
profession. Massage has gained much recognition from other health
professionals as it becomes more widely accepted as an effective
treatment and/or supportive therapy for a very wide range of conditions.
I first qualified in 1990 with an ITEC certificate in Massage,
Anatomy and Physiology. In 1994 I qualified in Aromatherapy
with the Shirley Price Aromatherapy College - one of the leading
Aromatherapy colleges in the country. I now use essential oils where
appropriate to boost my treatments or for my clients to use themselves.
In 2010 I completed a Foundation course in Shiatsu at the
British School of Shiatsu in London as I also have a keen interest in
the Eastern way of looking at health and wellbeing. This enables me to work of acupressure points during a massage where appropriate.
In 2014 I completed a year long Certificate in Advanced Clinical Massage with the JING Institute of Advanced Massage Training, based in Brighton. The Jing Institute is at the forefront of improving the quality of training for Massage Therapists in the UK and is working hard to improve the recognition of massage therapy as a highly effective treatment for a host of different problems - especially in the treatment of chronic pain conditions. I have also completed my training in Hot Stone Massage with the Jing Institute - a wonderful addition to my skills. The use of hot, and sometimes cold, stones within a clinical massage treatment really deepens the effects of the massage and brings fantastic results. Treatment of Scar Tissue is also an important part of my training - another area which can bring great results - even on scars which are years old. Working with Caesarean, Hysterectomy and Mastectomy scars is an important part of my work - but any scar tissue can benefit from myofascial techniques - helping to reduce the appearance of scars in many cases but also reducing adhesions and allowing the body to be better aligned.
Over the years I have attended regular courses to widen and boost my skills. I can be
confident that my skills are up to date and that I can draw on many
different techniques so that each treatment I give will be adapted
accordingly. These courses include:
- Advanced Clinical Massage for Low Back Pain, Hip and Pelvis Pain, Leg Knee and Foot Pain
- Advanced Clinical Massage for Neck and Shoulder Pain, Shoulder Girdle Pain, Arm and Wrist Pain
- Treatment of scar tissue - especially Caesarean, Hysterectomy and Mastectomy scars - using Myofascial techniques
- Remedial and Sports Massage Techniques
- Massage and Aromatherapy in Cancer Care
- Massage and Aromatherapy in Pregnancy
- Trigger Point Therapy
- Myofascial release techniques
- Acupressure techniques and the study of meridians
I am a full member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists
(FHT) and am registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare
Council (CNHC). As a member of the FHT I am listed on their
Complementary Healthcare Register which is accredited by the
Professional Standards Authority (PSA) under its Accredited Voluntary
Register (AVR) scheme.
I have been a regular volunteer at a local Hospice,
providing massage to patients and carers to support them through their treatment.
I also recently spent 4 years volunteering at a local Centre offering therapies to people with chronic and terminal illnesses.
